Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was young her carnival barker father died and left her mother with no choice but to become a cleaner lady and waitress in order to support her family. Ruth was born in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she attended high school. She quit school in just two short years to pursue acting. She faced many obstacles on her chosen career path. When she was in New York she was hired to pose for photos for a magazine about crime however, no theatre opportunities were offered. While in New York, she worked at a bar, as the check-in lady before resigning before moving to Boston. She worked as an usherette during the day and then appeared at the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first ever permanent acting job. Drama studies led her to earn her degree in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
